Brevard Community College (BCC) holds a special place in our family history because it is where my step-daughter met her future husband. Located on the Florida Space Coast, BCC offers a combination of academics and lifestyle that almost any college student would enjoy. Whether you are looking for certification, training, or an associate's degree, BCC probably has a program that will help you achieve your dreams for the future. Location Brevard County, Florida stretches along the Atlantic coast of central Florida. In addition to its main campus in Cocoa, Brevard Community College also has campuses in Melbourne, Palm Bay, and Titusville. Students are offered online-courses as well. In addition to its mild, sunny climate, BCC is located in close proximity to the beaches of Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, Port Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center, Orlando, Orlando International Airport, Disney World, SeaWorld, and a host of other attractions. Programs and Degrees Degree Programs. Brevard Community College offers an associate in arts degree that centers on the traditional liberal arts subjects. BCC students who earn an associate in arts degree are guaranteed admission to one of eleven public Florida universities. Students have the responsibility to make sure that they have completed the required courses for an associate degree at BCC and for their intended major at a university. BCC credits from the associate in arts program are also transferable to other public and private institutions throughout the country. The associate in science degree includes majors in Crime Scene Technology, Computer Programming and Analysis, Digital Television and Media Production, Interior Design, Paralegal Studies, and Veterinary Technology. Majors in the medical field are popular, including Dental Assisting and Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, and Radiography. The associate in applied science degree includes studies in aerospace technology, business administration, criminal justice, and engineering. The associate in science and applied science degrees are not considered transfer degrees. Training and Certification. BCC offers programs designed to qualify a student for an entry-level position in a specific field of employment, including an applied technology diploma, a college credit certificate, and a postsecondary adult vocational certificate. Specialties include accounting technology, business management, chemical lab specialist, drafting, educational assisting, and paramedic. My step-son, previously an accomplished self-taught welder, enhanced his welding ability by taking a BCC welding course. He also qualified for a certification, which has enabled him to bid on big jobs that would not otherwise be open to him. The Institute for Business Training & Community Education offers customized training and certifications tailored to meet the requirements of local employers. These are non-credit courses of short duration. These programs are essential for workplace development in a global economy. Tuition As a state school, Brevard Community College offers Florida residents a low rate of $76.00 per credit hour. In contrast, non-residents are charged $283.00 per credit hour. Special reduced rates are available for Brevard County teachers and senior citizens. For vocational programs, tuition is $58.55 per credit hour for residents and $234.18 per credit hour for non-residents. Financial Aid BCC students are entitled to apply for Federal Pell Grants, which do not have to be repaid. Depending on the number of credit hours for which a student is enrolled, Pell Grants range from $400 to $4310. BCC participates in the Federal Stafford Loan Program, under which students can apply for subsidized and unsubsidized loans from private lenders. State grants are available under two programs: the Florida Student Assistance Grant Program for degree programs; the Florida Public Postsecondary Career Education Student Assistance Grant Program for certificate programs. The Brevard Community College Foundation also awards need-based scholarships. Sports The college experience at BCC is enhanced by the opportunity to participate in several competitive sports, including men's baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's golf, women's softball, and women's volleyball. The BCC Titans participate in the Suncoast Conference of the Florida Community College Activities Association and have competed at the national level. When my step-daughter was at BCC, she participated on the swim team. Her performance earned a full scholarship to a private four-year university for her junior and senior years. Some BCC athletes have become professional golfers and baseball players. Special Programs - Dual Enrollment Program. Qualified 10th, 11th, and 12th graders may take courses at BCC in which credits count toward both a high school diploma and an associate degree. - Remedial Classes. Some students have a high school diploma but do not have sufficient skills to commence college level courses. BCC offers a range of on-line remedial courses in math, English, and other basic subjects. - Veterans. Brevard Community College has the approval of the Florida State Approving Agency for Veterans Training to enroll veterans receiving assistance under the GI Bill. Leadership BCC's President, Dr. James A. Drake, has been at the helm since 2007. An experienced administrator and author, Dr. Drake is willing to make the hard choices facing all educational institutions as the result of decreased funding and increasing enrollment. He introduced the four-day work week. All classes At Brevard Community College are held on Monday through Thursday. The $267,000 yearly savings in air conditioning and heating costs enabled the college to hire ten additional full-time faculty members. Despite misgivings expressed at the outset, both faculty and students appreciate the three-day weekend and the gas savings for commuters. Surprising everyone, Dr. Drake donated his 2008 raise of $100,000 to a scholarship program which distributes $300 stipends to needy students for the purchase of textbooks. Conclusion Whether you live in the local area, another state, or another country, BCC offers you a range of educational opportunities, including several degree programs and numerous training/certification programs. Over the past two decades, Brevard Community College has steadily improved its reputation as a quality institution for higher learning. President James Drake seems to be ideally placed to lead BCC and its students to achieve their maximum potential.
